An update from Eric Wells:
Greetings! I am pleased to announce that our second Habitat project is close at hand. Although I had hoped to make this announcement earlier, due to the heavy rains this Winter, there have been unforeseen delays in the project. Fear not, however, I have been told by the folks at the Athens Habitat office that we are getting close.
For now, we are planning on having a groundbreaking ceremony and blessing of the property in conjunction with the first day of the build. I have requested a three week lead time from Habitat to give you all plenty of time to mark your calendars. We will need approximately 16 volunteers to be available for the build, but would like as many of our families/members to be present for the ceremony as possible. We are planning on having light breakfast food and coffee available, and only the actual builders will stay for the entire day. So far, we have most of the committee positions filled.
James Buckner is the volunteer coordinator. If you want to volunteer or if you have any questions about helping with the project, James can be contacted at .
Mark Wheeler will be responsible for communications. In order to keep the parish up to date on the project, you can look for Habitat e-letters, Tower articles, and announcements at services.
Julie Miller will be in charge of archiving the project. We will have an email address that will serve as a depot for all pictures taken during the build.
We need someone to coordinate the volunteers that will make lunches. It will probably not involve making lunch every week. I'm working on having several of the days taken care of. I will discuss this with the coordinator.
We also need someone to be in charge of in-kind donations. It's not critical immediately, but if anyone is interested in helping to acquire donated furniture, appliances, dishes/silverware, etc., please let me know.
We could also use a couple of at large helpers that could help the coordinators.
I hope that you all find time to help with the Habitat House, I promise you'll have a great time and feel great doing it. I found it to be one of the most rewarding projects that I have ever been involved in. I am the project coordinator, so if you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me at .
You can also contact Melissa Fulcher at the Emmanuel office and she can contact me. ( )
There will be signup sheets in front of the church office once we have the start dates firmed up.
Description: In Habitat, partnership means working together toward a common goal. When Habitat builds a house, many people are involved; through the combined effort of our staff, board members, sponsors, homeowners, and volunteers, we can succeed in our effort to improve the housing situation in the Athens Area. In addition to groups and individuals volunteers who participate in the actual construction of the houses, Habitat homeowners build as well. (from http://www.athenshabitat.com/about_who.htm).
